Death of E-mail

We all know that email is not being used by students. However, The Death of E-mail sums it up nicely.

I think the most important takeaway from this article is that these networking communities become a central communications center. They bring together different types of communication vehicles into one application. And the great part is that they become more powerful when the different communication vehicles are combined vs. managed separately.

I read a similar article last year "Email is for Old People"

It wasn't long ago that Universities widely adopted email as the preferred means of communication for students, all but mandating that students check it at least weekly, as less snail mail was going to be sent out. Utilizing advancing technology for effective communications just makes sense. Who knows when we might be requiring online community participation as a complement/supplement to the entire college experience, or only communicating through Instant Messenger or online social networking means.
